About Kyrgyzstan Republic

Kyrgyz Republic is an independent country and it was a part of USSR (Union Of Soviet Socialist Republics) ┬ábefore in got its independence in 1991. Kyrgyzstan republic is located in the central Asia. The currency of Kyrgyzstan is the Som, which replaced the Soviet ruble on May 10, 1993. Its ISO 4217 currency code is KGS. As per the current conversion rate on 05/03/2014, 1 SOM=1.43 Taka.

Islam is the dominant religion of Kyrgyzstan, although during Soviet regime, state atheism was encouraged. Although the country is a secular state, Islam has exerted a growing influence in politics. 80% of the population is Muslim, while 17% follow Russian Orthodoxy and 3% other religions.

Kyrgyzstan became a bilingual country in September 1991. It is one of the two former Soviet Republics in central Asia to have Russian as its official language, along with Kyrgyz. The Kyrgyz language belongs to the Turkic group of languages.

The climate is continental: cold winters and hot summers with big local deflections depending on the altitude. In July the average temperature in the lowlands ranges from +17 to +27 degrees C (the highest temperature can be more than +40 degrees C). At the altitude of 3000 m above the sea level the temperature can only be about +10 degrees C. In winter there are frosts in all regions.

A number of diverse cultures thrive in Kyrgyzstan, but traditional the “Kyrgyz” culture is predominant. The culture is most concentrated in rural areas, particularly Naryn. Kyrgyz culture is a nomadic, tribal way of life rich with seasonal traditions, and unlike neighboring societies, has been entirely portable. Thus the rugged countryside’s historic architecture is not buildings but transiting, self-contained communities with movable homes called yurts.
